
Do you speak Bankish? Insurancese? Prospectian? Or how about Customerese? Marketing is communication and you need to market in many different languages. When you develop collateral materials, facility lists, and equipment lists, they have to address a bunch of different languages. Each of your relationships calls for a different language as each relationship is looking for something different. When you need to go to the bank, you need to gather up all of your marketing materials along with the financial information and present it to your banker. They need to fully understand what you do, who you are and how you market. Walking in with printed material about your company will make that banker feel that he can endorse that loan or line of credit because you have made him feel that you are viable. Remember anyone who is taking a risk doing business with you needs to feel good about you. Bankers and Loans, Insurance agents and policies, prospects and new business, customers and old business, make your relationships a focus of your marketing policies.
When you get all the languages working, you get another benefit. Referrals. When the banker is talking to a client that needs your services, the banker refers you or the insurance agent or one customer to another. It is very hard to find what moved someone to visit you. They may have heard your name three different times and that provoked their interest. Marketing is getting your name out there and making things happen. A better interest rate on the loan or a better category on a workman's' compensation policy or a contract from one of your customers other vendors. Marketing does it for you.
Always be prepared to send out an email attachment with a note to someone on a specific issue, have collateral materials ready for a visit from a banker or vendor and attach a couple sheets to a proposal to a customer. Remember that it is up to you to learn their language not up to them to learn yours.
